The 4 blade prop is used with the 2 cylinder copper jacket engine. It is based on a design that is about 1922. The pattern for this prop was taken from an original that is now at the bottom of Lake Rousseau. It takes Paul about 20 to 25 hours of painstaking labour after he gets the casting back from the foundry. Right now, the waiting list for a new blade prop is about 12 to 18 months because they are so devilishly hard to do.
The bigger 2 blade prop is the classic DisPro prop used with the 1 cylinder copper jacket engine. Note the use of Paul's finger to support the prop in order to get the picture. The 2 blade props take about 8 hours to finish and are sort of stock items that Paul has done. <
You'll notice that the prop is raked towards the back - a classic design from the early 1900's.
The smaller prop below is used with the much higher speed Coventry Victor 2 cylinder engine. It runs over twice as fast as the copper jacket engines (that's when the copper jacket engines are running well!)
The design for this prop is from the late 1940's. The prop is so small that Paul had to use his baby finger to support it.
We took the opportunity to get some pictures of the prop of The Wanda III while is was up on the dock in Gravenhurst. Note how the blades are raked toward the back. It has 4 blades with square tips - sort of like the 4 blade DisPro prop. The Wanda III prop is 36 inches in diameter with a 54 inch pitch.
